"#28"

White Sands National Park, New Mexico

"Wind works the dunes like a sculptor, etching the surface into a textural tapestry. The sun on the other hand degrades its masterpiece, weakening the character and softening the definition until the elaborate design crumbles. Like a snake preparing to molt, its textures are merely obscured by the worn exterior, and just like that snake, the landscape must shed the loosened grains to reveal the defined beauty once more. Whipping into a frenzy, the wind blows the spent material off the burdened slope, carving the elegant ripples back into the revitalized face. The sun’s pursuit of destruction will continue but as long as the wind remains committed the beauty will never be lost."

Purgatory on Earth, the Sands Study documents the elegant beauty of the hellish dune landscape. The lore of purgatory is one of intense suffering, a place designed to punish the souls vanquished to it in order to purify them for eternal peace. The Sands Study is my attempt to capture the peace within the brutal landscape of the sand dunes. You can read the entire series statement and browse the rest of the collection here.
