"An overcast sky obstructed the depths of infinity. Shrouded by the gloom, the contours of the dunes diffused into a smooth, continuous mass, concealing depth and hindering perception. A tangible surface with no discernable proximity, the ground dissolved into an illusion making for an anxious guessing game with contact. Stumbling about on an improvised trail, confidence built over stretches of level footing but this minefield of invisible disruptions was quick to trip the sure foot, shattering the delicate ego and escalating frustration. Two options sat at the table, sit and wait for the sun to break and light the way, or venture on and learn to navigate this harrowing landscape. The sun will return either way but the boat that can weather the rough seas will arrive home sooner."
Purgatory on Earth, the Sands Study documents the elegant beauty of the hellish dune landscape. The lore of purgatory is one of intense suffering, a place designed to punish the souls vanquished to it in order to purify them for eternal peace. The Sands Study is my attempt to capture the peace within the brutal landscape of the sand dunes. You can read the entire series statement and browse the rest of the collection here.
