"#17"
Great Sand Dunes National Park, Colorado
"When we look in the mirror we see our reflection. When we look through the mental sphere we see two. One is our current state. Dull and vulnerable, it represents the raw truth of our being. All the faults, the shortcomings, the baggage, forgotten hopes, and surrendered dreams are tattooed beneath a loosely covered veil of excuses that we use to convince ourselves this outcome was inevitable. In its shadow lurks its imaginative twin. A refined form, it combats our lies with honesty though muted by the pleadings of its egotistical counterpart. It offers an alternative vision for the future, one within our control, one free of regret, one only possible if we ditch the freeloader hogging the mirror preventing us from seeing our true potential."

Purgatory on Earth, the Sands Study documents the elegant beauty of the hellish dune landscape. The lore of purgatory is one of intense suffering, a place designed to punish the souls vanquished to it in order to purify them for eternal peace. The Sands Study is my attempt to capture the peace within the brutal landscape of the sand dunes. You can read the entire series statement and browse the rest of the collection here.
