"Our minds have been imprisoned in an unconscious purgatory. Our thoughts, hijacked, enslaved by a fear of boredom being pushed to the brink of extinction. Like an addiction, we crave the distraction, desperate for something to pierce the numbness of reality. Then, for an instant, our eyes open, for a moment we are conscious. We feel our feet on the ground and the air in our lungs as presence settles in. Relief washes over the mind, calm, as a joyous energy begins to build. It’s subtle, but a whisper of freedom can launch a revolution. The bold enlist, break their shackles and devour every drop of this newfound enlightenment. The majority retreat into the darkness, startled by the brief brush of sunlight if they even noticed it at all."
Purgatory on Earth, the Sands Study documents the elegant beauty of the hellish dune landscape. The lore of purgatory is one of intense suffering, a place designed to punish the souls vanquished to it in order to purify them for eternal peace. The Sands Study is my attempt to capture the peace within the brutal landscape of the sand dunes. You can read the entire series statement and browse the rest of the collection here.
