Syzygy Collection
Eternity’s primordial son, it spawned the universe, it sired the gods, it reigns supreme. Lurking in the ethereal shadows, it conducts the symphony of existence with the composure of a disgruntled beehive. Uncontrollable by nature, it suffocates with overwhelming confusion, a raging tempest intensified by the panic it induces. This elemental tormentor is the erratic nightmare and formidable antagonist we call chaos.
From this calamity arises a natural propensity, albeit daring, for control. Trepid is the trail through the unknown but if the tumultuous course can be plotted, peace will befall the anxious wanderer. So we attempt to sequence the randomness, we scour the probabilities for potential certainties, we find solutions to the elaborate equation of chance. Chaotic as the system may be, systems, by nature, produce patterns and patterns help us establish order.
As opposites go, this pair appears, by all accounts, to fit the bill. Order is the structure that arises from the unstable framework of chaos, however, the weight of these combatant forces is not the same. Chaos exists on a cosmological scale, it is the governing body of the universe. Order, on the other hand, is a product of the mortal man, the illusory leash we employ to restrain that beyond our control. We believe these forces to be as elemental as fire and water though the sacred waters will forever douse the manufactured flame.
While we perceive order to be the opposition to the ruling class of chaos, these forces are actually harmonious. This massive rock upon which we’re stranded is hurtling, uncontrollably through infinity yet it does so with a consistency that allowed us to structure time and navigate every corner of the map. While chaos is the governing entity of this authoritarian system, it ultimately produces the order we crave. In reality, the true opposition to chaos is impatience. Trust in the destined arrival of order will forever illuminate the path through the uncharted landscape of tomorrow.
The Syzygy Collection is a testament to this immortal pairing. Each photograph has a partner image that, together, represents the two factions of this eternal system. Within each frame is a contrasting form for resonance, a figure emerging from obscurity to signify the structure implicit in the larger picture. Individually, they give credence to one side of the cosmological scale. Together, they reflect the inevitable balance we inherently resist. This series is a meditation on that balance, and on the quiet realization that, in time, even the most disordered moments reveal their place within the greater whole.
